Sprachkurs :

Wenn Sie bereits gute Englischkenntnisse oder Französischkenntnisse besitzen (mindestens B2 nach dem Europäischen Referenzrahmen) können Sie direkt mit dem Volunteer Projekt starten. Ansonsten bieten wir vorbereitenden Einzelunterricht mit 10 Wochenstunden an.

Tätigkeit als Volunteer

Die Mitarbeit in einem Freiwilligenprojekt sollte mindestens 4 Wochen betragen, maximal sind 12 Wochen möglich.

Bereich Umweltschutz/Naturschutz/Tierschutz :

Projekt 1 : VOLUNTEER TORTOISE CONSERVATION

This is a conservation and ecotourism venture aiming at restoring the original lowland native forest of the Reserve and the re-introduction of giant land tortoises. This project of ecosystem recreation is known as‘re-wilding’. This is being done over an area of 20 hectares. Along with the ecotourism activity, the Reserve runs a museum depicting the human, natural and geological history, a historical/archival documentation centre and a scientific laboratory. The Reserve encourages research projects in the following fields: palaeontology, ecology, botany, tortoise biology and Karst sciences.

The 20 hectare Reserve has to date over 900 tortoises of two species; Aldabra Giant Tortoises and Radiata Tortoises. The reforesting operation is an on-going activity particularly during the rainy seasons and so far some 115,000 endemic & indigenous plants have been planted in the Reserve.

What will you do?

Your work will vary, depending on what is required at the time that you volunteer.
We ask you to be enthusiastic, versatile and willing.

Duties or jobs that you may experience will include:

· Helping with tortoise husbandry - feeding, weighing and caring for tortoises.
· Helping with the management of the reforestation project – planting, weeding and seedlings monitoring.
· Helping with the administrative works and office duties of the Reserve.
· Assist scientists with their field works; - sieving of excavated materials, recording & photographing of bones
· As and when necessary, you may be asked to devise and prepare talks for school children.
· Helping with the recording of historical documents.


Projekt 2 : VOLUNTEER CORAL REEF CONSERVATION

We are a local NGO set up in 2004. We are dedicated to the conservation and restoration of the marine environment of Mauritius through the implementation and management of conservation, research, education and sensitization projects. We employ professional staff to implement and manage projects and to participate in ecosystem monitoring and other activities.

Strategic objectives
· To promote community integration with marine conservation and resource management through research, education and training.
· To implement projects with a view of promoting marine conservation and resource management.
· To encourage people to respect laws on marine environment and to protect underwater and coastal ecosystems through awareness raising activities and campaigns.
Our Current Projects

FixedMooring Buoys (FMB) · To deploy at popular dive and snorkel sites to reduce anchor damage on coral· To use as a focal point to sensitize resource users and the general public on marine conservation issues and encourage no-take practices at FMB sites
Marine Environmental Education · To set up environmental corners in primary schools consisting of an endemic & native garden in a corner of the schoolyard, as well as an indoors representation of the sea through the display of a dry aquarium and posters· To train teachers from participating schools on basic marine science concepts and on the use of marine environmental education materials· To integrate marine sciences in the curriculum of primary schools for Standards V and VI
Beach Resource Centre · The BRC has been operational since 2007; the building was allocated to us by the Beach Authority. It’s used for our education project to sensitise students, skippers, boat operators and the general public. The Beach Resource Centre is equipped with pedagogical tools and materials for visitors to get a better understanding of the marine environment
Mainstreaming Marine Conservation and Resource Management in Coastal Zone Management through the Tourism Industry · To initiate a community-based coastal resource management processes with fisher communities and tourism stakeholders· To develop sustainable tourism practices through the promotion of ‘Voluntary No-Take Areas’ (VNTAs) as focal points for the training of tourism stakeholders and fisher communities in marine ecology and conservation, developing synergies between the two stakeholders.· To develop Artisanal tourism through marine eco-guide training that primarily benefits the coastal communities as an alternative income resource
Innovative Ways of Communication for the Sustainable Management of the Marine Park · To build capacity for mobilizing local human resources and leadership, with building networks and evaluation of the process · To develop innovative ways of communication for future dialog between legislators, government officials and other stakeholders· To develop platforms and meetings for dialog about the management of marine resources · To develop questionnaires to identify perceived problems with communications and how to improve transparency in management of marine resources· To identify alternative income generating opportunities

WHAT WILL WE OFFER YOU?

Volunteers will be given a work station and desk top computers to work from while in the office.

As part of your stay, you will first be introduced to the marine environment through a number of training sessions and presentations;

WHAT WILL YOU DO?
Your work will vary, depending on what is required at the time of your internship.
Duties and/or jobs that you may experience will include:
· Development of strategies to interest people in our work, become a member, support us on a voluntary basis or simply how to encourage persons to support us financially.
· Volunteers will be given the opportunity to liaise with the public and help out at least once a week at the Beach Resource Centre.
· To get a better idea about our project work you will also act as an observer on several projects and activities.
· You may be asked to help construct Information Boards and/or other visual aids, including literature and other types of information for the Beach Resource Centre.
· You will be asked to help create and organise events and activities to raise awareness about our work and the environment.
· Help with data collection and analysis for ongoing projects, volunteers will be trained on monitoring and survey techniques used in the different projects in order to help carry out these activities when necessary.
· Those volunteers who have a level 2 scuba certificate may like to participate in our Community Voluntary No-Take Area Project, recording the species and checking the health of the corals at the project sites.
· Conduct dolphin watching surveys. You will be trained in the different research techniques which will give you an insight into methodology used during dolphin research, such as fin profile identification.


Sozialbereich/Erziehungsbereich :

SOCIAL WORK WITH CHILDREN

Since the 1970’s, this program has been committed to provide relief to deprived communities. In the recent decade, the focus of its action has been shifted to children in great distress and is now known as one of Mauritius’ leading NGO’s in the field of childcare. In Mauritius, there is insufficient support for children and families stricken by poverty, violence and abuse. In response to this urgent call, the program, currently, caters for over 500 children aged between 3 months to 18 years old through residential and a large section of non-residential services.

The children come from dysfunctional systems and have gone through much hardship with consequences on their overall growth and development. Separated from their biological families and placed under foster care by government services, children enrolled at this program carry a history of gross neglect and abuse, which can trigger complex emotional and behavioral issues. For this reason, the program digs into unequalled experience in early childhood support to provide services that respond to physical, psychosocial, educational and biological needs.

The program also functions as a local coordinator for intern students and volunteers from Europe. The initiation and integration of these international peers has shown successful results by improving research, pedagogical methods and community programs. Volunteers are asked to get involved in a range of duties and jobs: the majority of which will be assisting with the ongoing research projects and pedagogical activities, but can include home visits, self-help nutrition programs, fundraising events, and foster care programs.

TYPE OF ACTIVITIES AT THE PROGRAM

The organization is currently running family-type residential structures for children who have been removed from hostile environments. 50 children aged between 4-18 years are taken care at eight such structures after referral from the Child Development Unit and a national court process.

The Early Childhood Centre (0-8 years) hosts 21 children in the nursery and 85 pre-school age children. There is also an accompaniment-support service to 70 children attending the primary school. A day care service is provided to 15 children at the Women’s’ prison in Beau Bassin. A day care centre is provided to 33 children aged (3months – 3 years) and empowerment of their parents. Finally, an Early Childhood centre is also present where 36 children are of nursery age and 30 children of pre-school age and 15 children are accompanied to primary schools.

Our special needs school caters for around 60 children aged 7-16 years. These children, unable to be educated or trained at the ‘mainstream’ system, are provided with an alternative approach to education and training. An outreach service is attached to the school, providing services to 30 children in under privileged areas. Working with parents is a major activity for the 3 aforementioned services.

In addition to the residential and non-residential services, the program also caters for a psychosocial park for carrying out pedagogical and cultural activities for the children. A garden has been developed in an environmental-friendly venue to enhance children’s’ ability to develop their five senses and knowledge of nature. The park consists, for instance, of endemic plants, vegetable gardening area, medicinal corner, natural amphitheatre and play area for traditional Mauritian games.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?
Your work will vary, depending on what is required at the time of your engagement. We ask you to be enthusiastic, adaptable and willing to “muck in and get your hands dirty”.

Duties and/or jobs that you may experience will include:

· Helping with data collection and analysis for ongoing projects, especially with regards to social parameters fostering low child care systems. Field-based research to be done in mandatory presence of social workers includes participant observation, home visits, report writing, project monitoring and problem solving.
· Recording the social and environmental conditions of living and mapping the needs of the communities in different focus areas.
· Office-based duties include data analysis, record keeping and administration, producing pedagogical activities for educational facilities.
· Conducting surveys about parent and community involvement in projects.
· Training in the different research techniques and workshops held during your stay will be used to give you an insight into methodology used for early childhood care in Mauritius.

The program is an organization based on values of generosity, respect and solidarity. It is crucial that interns and volunteers understand and share the principles of the organization prior to their enrolment. Integrating a system where vulnerable children populations are involved can be emotionally demanding. Validated experience in childcare in developing countries can be an asset. Students following a curriculum in the field of Social Work will be offered priority placement.

Die Preise beinhalten nicht die möglichen Kosten für etwaige Transfers innerhalb Mauritius bspw. bei Tätigkeiten in Nationalparks (i.d.R. wird der Transfer jedoch kostenfrei vor Ort durch die NGO organisiert; der kostenlose Transfer kann jedoch nicht von One to One International garantiert werden)

Die Verlängerungswoche für das Volunteer Projekt kostet Euro 170,-. Der Preis für einen 1-wöchigen Sprachkurs liegt inklusive Unterbringung bei Euro 420,-.
